Sponge Iron (DRI),

Sponge is a high-grade feed for the manufacture of iron and steel, which can be obtained from the recovery of natural or processed iron ores without reaching the melting temperature. The product of the revitalization unit without passing the cooling unit in the furnace and at a temperature of about 600 ° C is transmitted by the special material transfer system to the steel making section for direct charging of the furnace.

Sponge iron after melting and regeneration in steel making, in the casting process, is used in the form of products, and is used in three forms of slabs (slabs), billet (bars) and fittings.

Today, about 5% of the world's steel is produced from sponge iron (DRI), and this trend is on the rise.

The pellet is a combination of iron that is obtained from the concentration of iron ore (concentrate). The rate of consumption of the pellets in the DRI production is about 1.45 tons per tonne of product. This means that in order to create a unit with a capacity of 1,700,000 tons of sponge iron, about 2,465 tons of pellets are needed.

The required natural gas is net Gcal / t DRI 35/2.

Lime is used as the main material of the liming system of the pellet on the furnace feed bar before entering the furnace. This process requires between 0.5 and 2.5 kg of lime per tonne of pellets, depending on the amount of silica in the pellet.
The catalyst inside the refractory pipes is filled with catalytic material containing nickel oxide with a different catalyst activity at certain heights of the tube. The consumption catalyst is 0.04 kg per ton of sponge iron.

The electricity consumed in the recovery unit per 1 ton of product is as follows:
• 100 kilowatt hours for HDRI (hot charge)
• 110 kilowatt hours for CDRI production (cold recharge)
Water in the recovery unit is used as a cooling machine for washing and reducing the temperature of the process gas. The amount of water consumed is 1.2 metric cubic meters per tonne of HDRI product.
